Make This Year Different

Get Moving

Was Thanksgiving as fun for you as it was for me? We had lots of food, lots of laughter, and lots of fun.

One thing is for certain, I ate too much and moved too little.

Studies show that this time of year is one of the busiest and unhealthiest. Most people gain 10-25 pounds between Thanksgiving and New Years.

Let's work to make this year different for you.

Here are some tips that will help you get moving instead of sitting on the couch bundled up with a warm blanket and hot chocolate:

Try something new - trying something new allows you to go into it with a perspective of having fun, versus measuring yourself against what you did yesterday or the day before. Try a new class like Pilates, yoga or swimming; or maybe it's time to try a new gym.

Start small - I mean really small; just plan to do something for five minutes, and the next day add a minute, and the following day add another minute. In no time at all you will be doing something everyday for 30 minutes. It adds up fast.

Change your focus - rather than having a big goal like running a half-marathon or winning a tournament, think about your why. Why do you want to exercise in the first place? Is it to have more energy, to be able to play with your kids, to improve your circulation, or just get better sleep? All of these are great reasons to get moving. Having a very compelling why is what keeps us going longer than having a goal that seems unreachable.

All you have to do to get moving is put one foot in front of the other.

Don't let the busyness and the stress of this time of year take over your life. Let this year be different for you.
