Finding Your Middle Ground with Mindful Eating

When it comes to eating, it's important to find what works for you: What nourishes your body and your emotions, and what satisfies you. Finding a middle ground means trying out different ways of eating in order to figure out what's helpful and sustainable to you!

Below are three strategies and specific suggestions to help you find your middle ground when it comes to mindful eating.

Strategy #1 - Balance the pendulum - eat a little of everything, for example, tapas-style.

Pay attention to basic portions, and maybe use your hand as a guide:

  • About one fist of vegetables
  • About one palm of protein
  • About one cupped hand of whole grains
  • About one thumb of healthy fats

Strategy #2 - Eat like an animal - honor physical hunger & eat seasonally

Strategy #3 - Create room for pleasure - mindfully enjoy foods considered more indulgent, if you choose. Get creative about food choices.

Incorporate these three strategies to help you find your middle ground with mindful eating.

Many times the way we eat is the way we do other things in our life. Our why of eating can be affected by the Primary Foods in our life. Remember that Primary Foods are things like healthy relationships, physical activity, a career or job that you love, and a soothing spiritual practice.

Use the seven strategies below for finding your middle ground in your Primary Foods:

Strategy #1: Empower yourself - look for ways to improve your relationships, physical activity, career & spiritual practice by reading a good book on the subject or working with a coach.

Strategy #2: Keep it simple - Set one goal per week. Keep your goals simple.

Strategy #3: Focus on intention and attention - Explore your deeper "why" behind past mindsets & habits

Strategy #4: Crowd out - Focus on making small changes that don't leave you feeling deprived

Strategy #5: Balance the pendulum - Try different things and include variety in your day.

Strategy #6: Eat like an animal - Think about how animals do things, especially with their eating habits and physical activity. Are there things that you can incorporate into your eating habits and exercise?

Strategy #7: Create room for pleasure - Figure out ways to enhance your life in all areas. Schedule a date night, sign-up for a race, or other competition. Take on a new skill. We all need things to look forward to and to help us grow.

Use some of these strategies to improve the Primary Foods in your life and watch how your Secondary Food needs change.
