Your Current State of Health

How do you know if you are healthy?

Do you feel it?

Do you look it?

Many things go into how healthy we are...or aren't.

Here are some things to consider:

What's your BMI? While BMI is not the exact measure of health for every person, it does give you a good start in determining if you are on the right track to being at a healthy weight. A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy.

To determine your BMI, divide your weight in kilograms (your weight divided by 2.2 = your weight in kilograms) by your height in centimeters. (your height in inches divided by 39.37 = your height in centimeters).

What is your stress level? Excessive stress can have a significant impact on your health, and can increase cortisol, the stress hormone in our bodies, which is at the root of weight gain.

To decrease the stress in your life do simple things like taking a walk in nature, taking a hot bath, meditating, or taking time to read your favorite book.

Do you drink your calories? Many soft drinks, our favorite coffees or coffee creamers contain excessive amounts of calories and sugar.

Trading non-caloric beverages for soft drinks and fruit juices will not only give you room for "real" healthy foods, it will also save a ton of calories. By making this one small change, you could lose up to 10 pounds in one month. I challenge you to try it.

Do you spend most of your day sitting? Being sedentary increases mortality and can make it harder to get around as you get older.

The Department of Health & Human Services recommends a total of 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle. That's only 30 minutes of exercise five times per week. You can even break up those 30 minutes to 10 minutes at a time to get the same effect.

It really doesn't matter where you're starting from or what your current state of health might be. It just takes paying a little more attention to your daily habits.

Measure your BMI and try to keep it in the healthy range. Identify the stress in your life and do some things to decrease that stress, if you can. Try removing soft drinks and fruit juices from your diet and see what it does for your waist line, and finally, find some time to move everyday.
